Baseball Tips

Pitching

  • If you want to strengthen your pitching arm...
include long toss at least twice a week in your routine.
Understand that velocity will improve each year with maturity and growth.

  • Throwing curve balls before age 14-15 yrs poses the risk of inflicting permanent damage to a pitcher’s arm. The stress and torque necessary to produce the curve ball rotation can tear ligaments, cause tendons and bone tissue to rupture and create `the potential for nerve damage. Also be careful to monitor pitch counts for young pitchers as too much throwing without proper rest can cause serious injuries. 40-60 pitches per game is enough for pitchers ages 9-12 yrs followed by at least two days rest

Hitting

  • Cage hitting is an excellent training tool. Try completing the “stride and load” before the ball leaves the machine and hit the ball to all fields.

  • Good physical hitting mechanics require a balanced stance, efficient swing path and ability to visually track the ball. Good mental hitting starts with “getting a good pitch to hit” The best hitters train themselves from an early age to attack the good strikes and lay off bad pitches.

Conditioning

  • Ages 9-13 should not be concerned with building muscle.Youth specific conditioning and agility programs are designed to enhance body control, coordination and speed. Muscle size will come later.
